Here it is then. Tried to get a star bokeh hood to work but it didn’t quite do what I wanted.

I wasn’t going to enter this week, but I shot this yesterday and thought it fit with the theme. When I looked at the image on the camera screen I thought the subject looked like they were floating out of the lane and into the open street.

Here is my go at this weeks assignment for Digital Photography School. The topic for this week is to do an album cover, and the theme I chose (ie. album name) is “Canned Heat”. I left a fair bit of negative space up the top so the name of the artist and album could be placed there, but chose not to add it myself given my average graphic design skills.
It took a while to set this up. I cut the bottom out of a large can and inserted a cardboard snoot in which I could insert my flash. I had some red cardboard and red cellophane to create the reddish/purplish hues. I was trying to get it redder but I think I needed a darker or more robust filter. Obviously I ran my flash off camera, with my cheap Ebay remote set-up, in manual mode at 1/4 power.
The lid of the can was then used as a bounce to light up my model’s face. I also had her wear sunglasses to reflect the can in the lens. I also had a black piece of material about 80cm behind the model for the background.
After taking a tonne of shot that were all almost the same, I finally settled on one to crop and do some post processing in Lightroom. The PP was to up the contrast and drop come of the shadows out as well as drop the exposure on the lid and can opening by 0.80 selectively using a brush.
So here you have it, my album cover, “Canned Heat”.

OK, plenty of mistakes in my catalogue, but not really anything good. I like this one though that came about when messing around with exposure levels and auto bracketing. I was shooting the sunset over Melbourne from my balcony.
It is a mistake because it is too dark, grainy and perhaps too silhouetted, plus there is lens flare. But I like it for the color, the definition of the clouds, the details such as the cranes and the landmarks I can identify by their silhouettes!

OK, I decided to do a bit more post processing for the DPS Assignment. I wanted to up the contrast with the black and white and lighten the image. This also took the cloud texture out and made the background almost entirely white. I also added a vignette which I have never done before and am not too sure about, but it is what it is.
